How to own a piece of the web, for free

You can own a piece of the web, and it won’t cost you a penny. Google will do the heavy-lifting.

Pay close attention when writing the title of a blog post. You will be more than repaid by the attention to the post that Google will bring your way.

I have written before on the importance of picking a good title for a blog post, and one of my posts yesterday has proven to be an example. That post, Starting the day with Ubuntu 8.10 Linux, has been the most viewed since its publication.

I don’t really know why this is so. I did a search on “starting day ubuntu” and this post came up first. I also tried “ubuntu day” and “starting ubuntu,” but neither of them made the front page.

My best guess is the views came because of the combination of “starting” and “ubuntu.”

But we don’t need to know the reason, do we. I got the views, and that’s what counts.

At least for a time I will own a piece of the web, the piece defined by matches displayed on the first page that Google serves up after doing a search on a string related to the title of the post.

You can own a piece, too. It is an enTITLEment that comes with being a skilled blogger.
